Bishop of Guildford's Foundation

Helping the needy in Surrey and North East Hampshire

Despite the wealth of Surrey and North East Hampshire, beneath the surface there are people in need. There are pockets of poverty and deprivation, both in some of the larger towns and in rural areas. There are people who are excluded, including ethnic minority groups, and others who are vulnerable or need support. Within our communities, people struggle with mental health problems, with caring for older people with dementia, with young people involved with drugs or crime. The fact that Surrey and North East Hampshire are comparatively wealthy makes it more difficult to raise the funds required for these community projects.

The Bishop of Guildford's Foundation is an independent charity, set up in 1993 with the aim of supporting faith-linked projects and groups that respond to local needs and help build stronger communities. It expresses a sense of communal solidarity with people in need and provides a mechanism for wealthier parishes and church members to channel support to needier groups. Grants are made to a wide variety of causes, including charities working with people who have disabilities, family support projects, youth and children's workers, organisations developing employment for vulnerable people, community organisations, projects for the homeless and much else.

How is it funded?
The Foundation raises funds within the diocese and beyond. Its special link with diocesan mission is expressed in the collection taken at each Confirmation or Licensing Service, which is given to the Foundation's work. Half the monies raised by the Bishop's Lent Call each year are also given to the Foundation. In addition, local fundraising activities and events bring in extra funds and many individuals support the Foundation generously.
