Continuing Ministerial Training

A Guide to what is provided for clergy beyond IME 4 - 7

If you are a licensed member of clergy in the Diocese, you are included in the provision for Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD). This includes self-supporting clergy, ordained local ministers (OLMs) and stipendiary clergy alike. It is expected that you will follow a programme of ministerial development, education and training which uses what the Diocese provides as well as attending outside courses. If you are retired and/or on PTO, then the provision is more limited. You are welcome to attend any CMD Study Days or Sharing Good Practice Days.

Annual personal allowance
Clergy have an annual personal allowance, currently worth £200, which may be spent on one or more educational or training courses and opportunities. The money is held for you in a personal account and can be held over for up to three years so that you have £600 to spend on a more major event. However, if it is not spent by the end of the third year, the account reverts to a nil balance and the process begins again. It is for you to decide how you would like to spend this money, though your plans must be approved by the Director of Ministerial Training and invoices must be supplied. It must be spent on ministerial development and is not to be used for retreats, spiritual direction, holidays, to buy books or for UK travel.

To use money from your account, please let Hazel Whitehead know how you plan to spend it by sending her details of the course/training, with a brochure or leaflet, if possible, to: Diocesan House, Quarry Street, Guildford GU1 3XG or contact hazel.whitehead@cofeguildford.org.uk.

CMD Study day Programmes
This is a year round programme from which you are expected to take at least one option, up to a maximum of three. Further details of these are in the CMD Programme Brochure which is posted in the autumn of each year and which is available now electronically. Please click here.

If you have ideas of things you would like covered in future years, or believe you could offer a CMD day yourself, please keep Caroline Lazenby advised at caroline.lazenby@cofeguildford.org.uk.

Sharing Good Practice: Learning from one another
This is a small but important series of ad hoc days which aim to draw together people with similar interests. These days are listed in the CMD programme brochure. Please click here.

Fund for Major Awards
This fund provides up to six awards each year for those wishing to take further professional courses or degrees. A grant is currently worth £1000 per annum, for a maximum of three years. Contact hazel.whitehead@cofeguildford.org.uk. if you wish an application to be considered. Hazel, and those to whom you are accountable, will need to be sure you have thought through the implications of major study and have chosen a suitable course and institution.

Extended Ministerial Development Leave (previously known as Extended Study Leave (ESL))
Those who have been in stipendiary ministry for at least 11 years (ie 7 or 8 years after serving a title post) are under 59, and have been in their current post for at least 3 years, may be invited to take EMDL. Candidates for this are invited in order of their date of ordination and taking into account the circumstances of the individual and the parish. The EMDL is up to a maximum of three months and attracts a grant of £1000. Click here to see the application form and here to see the Guidelines.

Ministerial Development Leave (MDL)
Seven years after the first EMDL (ie after 18 years' ordained ministry) clergy may apply for a 4-week period of Ministerial Development Leave in which to pursue a particular piece of developmental work. There will be no major funding available for this but clergy may use their CMD personal allowance and apply for external grants.

In addition, clergy may apply for a special 4 week period of MDL at, for example, a point of transition or when a specific piece of work needs to be done.
Seven years after that (ie after 25 years' ordained ministry, and providing all conditions are met) clergy may apply for a further 3 month period of EMDL with the potential of a full grant.
This is open to full time, stipendiary, licensed clergy and self-supporting clergy who are effectively full time.

Local Ministry programme (LMP)
LMP offers a broad range of Level 3 (degree level) modules for ordinands and student LLMs, as well as some IME 4–7 provision. You are welcome to use your CMD allowance for attending one or more modules.

If you are not already a graduate, you could choose to study for a B.Th. If you are a graduate, there may be new areas of ministry and mission which you are interested in.
The short courses (open to all) may also offer relevant material from time to time. For more details, contact paulette.withycombe@cofeguildford.org.uk.

Southern Regional Institute (SRI)
Guildford Diocese is part of a consortium set up between seven southern dioceses - the SRI. This organises and staffs consultations for those clergy at points of transition in ministry such as first incumbency, moving to a new post, becoming a training incumbent and approaching retirement. Those who are eligible are invited to attend well in advance of the consultation.

These are sought after opportunities and well worth attending. The fees for this are met through the departmental budget (unless you drop out at the last minute, in which case they will be deducted from your personal allowance.)

Ministry Review: Affirmation and Accountability
The Ministry Review programme provides for you to meet one of the Bishop’s Review Team every other year (rather than every third year as in the past) in order to review and reflect upon your ministry and your development as a minister. The programme is administered by the Director of Ministerial Training.
A letter will be sent to you in advance of the review setting out the details of how to prepare for it. If you think you have been missed out of the system, please contact caroline.lazenby@cofeguildford.org.uk.

The booklet " Guideline for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy" is available from the main CofE website. Click here for the PDF.

Ministerial Coaching
The diocese has a small group of amateur but trained coaches. For specific periods of coaching (between 6 months and a year) contact hazel.whitehead@cofeguildford.org.uk.

This is an opportunity to set your own agenda and work through particular practical and ministerial issues with a colleague in a confidential way.

Encouragement and consultation
The Director of Ministerial Training is always pleased to meet you to discuss your ministerial development and training, whether you have a clear idea of what interests you or simply wish for an open and general discussion. Please contact hazel.whitehead@cofeguildford.org.uk.

LLMs
CMD for all LLMs, including special provision for LLMs in their first four years, is overseen by Revd Richard Hay, CMD Tutor for LLMs. Contact randmhay@compuserve.com.

Pastoral Assistants
CMD for all Pastoral Assistants is overseen by Revd Lynne Bowden, CMD Tutor Pastoral Assistants. Lynne is also responsible for all Pastoral Assistants once they have been authorised. Contact lynne.bowden@cofeguildford.org.uk.

Sue Lawrence, the Pastoral Assistant Trainer, works with a team of tutors on the increasingly popular PA course. Contact sue.lawrence@cofeguildford.org.uk

Feedback and Comments
The best guide to what provision for CMD is needed comes from you and your clergy colleagues. Feedback and comments are essential in evaluating and improving what our provision. Contact caroline.lazenby@cofeguildford.org.uk for an evaluation form that can be emailed to you.
