What does a 'Leading Worship Course' do?

It helps people to understand what leading worship means, and how to help worship happen.

How do we do it?

Our first evening begins by looking together at people. This is because the first thing a person leading worship does is to look at the people before them, and it is important to explore why they are there. We will look at them carefully, because each person is precious to God.

We, and those we serve through leadership, come together through God’s will, so our second evening examines His perspective and that of His Church. In these two weeks, our understanding of God, Church and people, and the essential relationship between them in worship, will develop.

This continues in the weeks following as the resources we have to enable and enrich that relationship are explored, one by one. Space and place, words, our senses and imagination, music and the momentum of worship each contribute another layer to our understanding of what it means to lead worship, our skilfulness in doing this and our sensitivity to ourselves as leaders.

Our final session offers an opportunity to consider what it feels like to lead in practice, and how we may be supported in this ministry. We conclude by reflecting on the answers we would like to give to the title question, ‘What does a leader of worship do?’ in the light of what we have learned together, and how this may contribute to our own leading worship ministry.

When the course is complete, still our knowledge will not yet be (because leading worship is a skill which takes time and constant attention) but, hopefully, we will have made a good beginning together, with the confidence to grow.

NB: When speaking of worshippers in the course material the word ‘they’ is used rather than ‘us’. This is not meant to imply a leader of worship is not also a member of the worshipping community, but in order to look objectively at the relationship between God and people by the course student.

NEXT COURSE STARTS JANUARY 2012
