Local Ministry Programme: Guildford
The Process
Anyone who enters authorised ministry in the Church of England will embark on a guided journey of thinking through their vocation, and ultimately will go through a selection process. Those who successfully complete this process, whether for lay or ordained ministry, undergo a specified training programme.

The Course
The Local Ministry Programme for Guildford Diocese (LMP:G) is part of the Department for Ministerial Training. We train Licensed Lay Ministers (Readers) and Ordained Local Ministers (OLMs) for service in parishes around the Diocese on a three year part-time course accredited by the Ministry Division of the Church of England and by Oxford Brookes University. The majority of students exit the course having gained a Foundation Degree in Ministry Studies.
The normal training programme begins in the September of each year and is based on three terms of 10 to 12 weeks each. The course is modular, with a main subject module per term and another ‘formation for ministry’ related subject woven through that term.
Most sessions are held in Guildford on a Monday evening. Evenings start with corporate worship at 7.30pm, and the teaching sessions happen between 8pm and 10pm. In addition there are two residential weekends per year, a four day summer school (for ordinands) and three Saturday Study Days.
We can put you in touch with current and previous students who will be willing to share their experience of training locally. It is also possible to arrange to visit on a Monday evening to have a taste of a teaching session and ask questions of students and tutors.

Additional Opportunities
As the course is modular we can provide opportunities for study throughout the year for interested learners from parishes and for Pastoral Assistants - auditing students - who may join the course for occasional modules. There is more about this, including a downloadable leaflet, below.
LMP also offers a BA (Hons) in Ministry and Religion for an additional three years. In certain circumstances is open to those who have not followed the LMP:G Course to Foundation level – contact the Course Principal for more information.

Ordained Local Minister (OLM) Training
Ordained Local Ministers are priests like any other ordained person. They will serve in parishes, leading worship, administering the sacraments, and engaging with their local community. At the end of training they are ordained by our diocesan Bishop alongside stipendiary or self-supporting ministers.
There is a distinctive characteristic of Ordained Local Ministers: an OLM will have been called out of a local congregation and will return to serve that same congregation rather than being nationally deployable. They will generally remain in that parish or benefice for at least the first five or six years of their ministry, if not indefinitely.

Licensed Lay Ministry (Reader) Training
LLM(Reader)s are lay people who are a theological resource in the parish. By retaining their lay (non-ordained) status, they are often seen as more accessible – for example in the workplace – than their ordained colleagues. They often preach, teach and lead worship and are active in their local community. Their training is very similar to that of OLMs.

Auditing Students
Want more than your Bible Reading notes can give you?
The Local Ministry Programme is open to interested learners who would like the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the Christian faith as well as those exploring their vocation without any commitment to a specific ministry. If you'd like to deepen your theological knowledge and understanding you would be most welcome to join our regular students on a Monday evening as an auditing student:
Autumn Term
- Introduction to the Bible (Year 1 module)
- Exploring the New Testament (Year 2 module)
- Knowledge of Christian Doctrine (Year 3 module)
Spring Term
- Introduction to Christian Tradition (Year 1 module)
- Engaging in Christian Ethics (Year 3 module)
Summer Term
- Exploring the Old Testament (Year 2 module)
You will see from the 2012 Course Calendar that this is not a complete list. Some modules are specifically tailored for those training for licensing/ordination and are not open to auditing students (e.g. Theological Reflection, Professional Practice, Preaching, Christian Ministry Today, Spirituality). Contact the Course Principal or the Course Administrator to find out more.
