Giving Insights

In 2011 the Churches Together Stewardship Network carried out a project to understand more about what givers in our churches think about their giving, how they give, what affects how much they give, and whether there are differences between denominations.

Over 1600 givers from five denominations completed a short survey, which has yielded a wealth of insights, including:

· the dependence of the churches on older givers, and those who might be expected to reach retirement in the next ten years.

· that how people give makes a significant difference to the level of their giving, with those giving by Standing Order on average giving at a significantly higher level.

· the degree to which givers feel guilty about their giving, and how they feel about the teaching they've received.

· whether church members think about their giving in proportion to their income, and what difference this makes if they do.

· the difference that commitment to the church makes, and also the importance of givers understanding the church's financial situation.

More information can be found on the Parish Resources website www.parishresources.org.uk/givinginsight/index.htm. The full report plus a four-page summary are available for free download from this site. Printed versions of the full report can be obtained from the National Stewardship Office of the Church of England nso@parishresources.org.uk  at a cost of £10.
