Stewardship and Funding

Christian Stewardship of our time, talents and possessions is inseparable from our discipleship and is vital to the viability of our mission. Support and guidance in all aspects of Christian Stewardship is available from the Diocesan Stewardship Officer Tony Hennessey-Brown.

Every parish is strongly encouraged to appoint a Parish Stewardship Promoter (PSP). PSP’s become part of a Diocesan network which shares information and approaches to enhance and effectiveness of stewardship in each parish.

The Healthy Stewardship Parish Checklist (click here for Word doc, click here for PDF) provides a simple tool for parishes to assess their approach to Christian Stewardship and points to useful resources to enhance it.

A wealth of information relating to Christian Stewardship is available from www.parishresources.org.uk and www.givingingrace.org

For parishes wishing to undertake a full stewardship programme (or annual renewal) the Parish Funding Programme (PFP) has a proven record of generating impressive increases in Planned Giving. The PFP has been adopted by more than 80 of our parishes, resulting in average increases of 40% in Planned Giving (over £1.4 million per annum in aggregate)

The PFP encourages each parish to discern its vision and future plans, as the focal point for an increase in Planned Giving. It is designed in a flexible format, so that it can be adapted to meet the particular character and needs of each parish. An outline of the programme is contained in the Parish Funding Programme Leaflet.

The Parish Funding Programme contains full details of how to execute the programme, including templates which can be adapted for parish use. Parishes are strongly advised to contact Tony Hennessey-Brown for an initial briefing before they start the programme.

A leaflet for our parallel programme called Living the Vision is also available. This aims to harness the talents and spiritual gifts which are needed to turn the parish vision into reality. An outline of the programme is available from the information leaflet.

Capital Projects

Assistance is also available in structuring Capital Appeals for building/refurbishment projects such as church extensions and parish rooms. Each appeal needs to be considered in its unique local context, and parishes are encouraged to contact Tony Hennessey-Brown at an early stage of considering a possible project.

Wills and Legacies

Across the Diocese, nearly 10% of income to parishes is given through Wills and Legacies, which have provided a crucial contribution to the development of parish mission.

The PCC Legacy Guide invites PCCs to decide on their approach towards promotion of will and legacies.

The Making a Will guide gives guidance to individuals who are considering making a will and /or legacy.

A range of resources and guidance is also available at www.churchlegacy.org.uk and www.willaid.org.uk

Mission and Parish Development Fund

This fund helps parishes to set up and enhance local mission initiatives. It provides a proportion of project costs according to need.

The information leaflet gives an outline of the criteria for applications. An application format should be completed and sent to Tony Hennessey-Brown.
