Diamond Jubilee celebrations got off to an early start in Wonersh when local school children took part in a special service to mark Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne on 6 February.

Year two classes from Longacre School and Wonersh and Shamley Green CofE Infant School met at Christ Church for the Accession Service, which began with pupils processing bearing flags of the countries which make up the UK, together with the flag of Canada to represent the Commonwealth.

Vicar Sally Davies said: “One child bore a faded but venerable Union Jack which was flown in the village for the Silver Jubilee of the Queen’s grandfather. We talked about why we were there and gave the Queen a huge round of applause in gratitude for her long and loyal service.”

Later in the afternoon many older residents who were born in the village over sixty years ago (the oldest being Mary Wood, three days short of her 98th birthday) gathered with their spouses for tea in the Arbuthnot Hall, which had been decorated in red, white and blue.
