Season of Invitation training in May

Date: 20 March 2014
Learn how to invite people back to church at three training sessions from 21-22 May in Surrey ahead of A Season of Invitation later this year.

A Season of Invitation is the latest initiative from the Back to Church Sunday team and will run from September to New Year. It will focus on five special Sundays, starting with either Harvest or Back to Church Sunday, through Remembrance, Advent, Christmas and New Year.

The free two-hour training sessions will help people from all denominations throughout the diocese to be prepared for these Sundays and learn how to make the most of this opportunity to invite people to church.

Local Mission Adviser, Stephen Cox said: “Having met with our trainer, Michael Harvey recently I am very excited by the potential of these sessions.

“He deals with some of the anxieties that prevent us from inviting others in a way that will not induce guilt and will avoid the concern that we are nagging people.”

Following the success of Back to Church Sunday, co-founder Michael Harvey will provide interactive and relevant training, which will be useful for church leaders, readers, PCC members and any churchgoers interested in making the most of opportunities to invite people to church.

The vicar of Cartmel Priory, the Revd Nick Denish said: “After a decade of the Back to Church movement, Season of Invitation is a real opportunity to invite someone to church more than once.

“Our research has shown that if they are invited on a number of occasions the invited person is more likely to stay.”

The training sessions are:

  • Wednesday 21 May - 8-10pm – St Thomas on the Bourne, Frensham Road, Farnham, GU9 8HA
  • Thursday 22 May – 2-4pm – The Education Centre, The Cathedral, Guildford, GU2 7UP
  • Thursday 22 May – 8-10pm – St Andrew’s, Oxshott, Oakshade Road, Oxshott, Leatherhead, KT22 0LE

All events can be booked at soi-guildford.eventbrite.co.uk
