Gift Aid

“That is why we labour and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God.

1 Timothy 4:10

Church of England parishes claim over £80 million each year from HMRC. Thanks to our hard-working Gift Aid Secretaries, parishes across the Diocese of Guildford were able to raise nearly £4 million in extra income through the Gift Aid Schemes - without anyone having to give another penny.

A checklist of points to assist when claiming gift aid

Support for Gift Aid Secretaries can be found on the Church of England’s Parish Resources website. It is strongly recommended that you check this website on a regular basis for any new updates. General Gift Aid information can also be found on HMRC’s website.

Claiming Gift Aid

Parishes can claim Gift Aid from HMRC using one of three new processes introduced in 2013:

  • The ChR1 paper form
  • Online Claims
  • Claiming using commercial software

For detailed guidance on making a claim can be found here.

Are your donors’ details up to date?

Gift Aid claims now require more information about the donor than previously, so you will need to check your records, and if you have more recent information regarding the donor’s name, address and postcode, then you should update this.

Have you updated the wording on any new Gift Aid declarations?

From January 2013 newly signed declarations need to have revised wording – see the guidance on the Parish Resources website

Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme

Introduced in 2013, the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS) allows parishes to claim a Gift-Aid style repayment to be received on small cash donations of £20 or less up to a threshold of £5,000 of donated income per year per church. Practical, step-by-step guidance can be found here.
