Living with the Mystics : John of the Cross, Master of Prayer

19 October 2019 10:30

Address: St Nicholas' Community Centre, Guildford

The sixteenth century Spanish Carmelite mystic, St John of the Cross, has widely been misunderstood. His association with the term ‘dark night of the soul’ has given him an unjustifiable association with doom, gloom and despondency. Yet,as we read his writings and listen to his poetry during our day together, we shall see that this vibrant and original writer well justifies the title ‘Master of Prayer’. No previous knowledge is required and the event is open to all.

Speaker: Peter Tyler

Dr Peter Tyler is Professor of Pastoral Theology and Spirituality at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, a UKCP registered psychotherapist, and Director of St Mary’s research centre InSpiRe. His books cover many subjects including psychotherapy and spiritual direction, Christian spirituality and the mystical tradition, St John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Wittgenstein and others.

Then afterward
    I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
    your old men shall dream dreams,
    and your young men shall see visions.

Joel 2:28
