Fundraisers take the plunge

Date: 31 May 2012

Fundraisers met their fears head-on and descended the belltower at St Martin of Tours this summer raising over £6,000 towards a £14,000 total to overhaul the church's ten bells.

A Jubilee Fair was held at the same time allowing spectators to enjoy ploughman’s lunches and cream teas whilst watching the 35 abseilers in glorious sunshine.

Bell ringer Roger Tompsett said: “In addition to raising a lot of money, we were delighted that so many people said how much they liked to hear the bells.

“Some even said that they wished they were louder! And an unexpected spin-off is that half-a-dozen new people have started to learn the art and science of bell ringing.”

The church’s ringers have a busy summer ahead including ringing for the Olympics, sponsored quarter peals and a special peal when the Queen passes through Epsom on her way to the Derby. -ends
