Sporting spectacular at the cathedral

Date: 07 August 2012
A MAJOR ART EXHIBITION showcasing amazing works of sporting art from Surrey’s leading artists and emerging talent opened at the Cathedral on 1 August.

Featuring works by sculptors Christine Charlesworth and Sarah Holmes, portrait painter Jane Allison and photographer Richard Booth among others, the Legacy of Sport exhibition celebrates this year’s Olympic games and the legacy of its athletes. The exhibition is designed to record the games artistically for future generations.

A celebration of sport

Opening the exhibition the Revd Canon Dr Julie Gittoes, residentiary canon at the cathedral: “The cathedral is a wonderful space in which to showcase the wealth and diversity of artistic talent here in Surrey in all its beauty and energy.

“The exhibition is also a celebration of sport, sporting personalities, their efforts and accomplishments during London’s Olympic year. What we see around us is the embodiment of virtues such as patience, courage, hope, grace and fortitude, reflecting human participation in the fullness of life and attentiveness to the physicality of the particular.”

The exhibition has been put together by Ann Aldridge, art curator and business development manager who has given her time and talent at no cost.
