OMG, it's Christmas!

St Peter’s Church, Guildford has used the tradition of displaying Christmas decorations to show the true meaning of a modern day phrase. Displaying the illuminated abbreviation ‘OMG’ with the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph on the front of the church has caught the eye of many and has left people wondering why the church is using an often controversial term. The Revd Kirsten Rosslyn-Smith explained: “We wanted to start a conversation with the community by showing the true meaning of Christmas. “Seeing the church use a term that many say or text everyday without thinking about it catches people’s attention. We want people to notice and understand that we are saying this is our God.” People of all ages have been commenting or driving past the church to have a look, from teenagers at the nearby Christ’s College to others in the community. The homemade sign has caught the eye of other churches in the area, with some hoping to use a similar idea in the future.
