Best-selling classical artist to perform at Guildford Cathedral

THE UK'S BEST-SELLING classical artist is visiting Guildford Cathedral this winter as part of a unique tour round some of the nation’s most beautiful Cathedrals for a special concert.

Russell Watson, one of the world’s most prominent tenors and the UK’s best-selling classical artist ever, will be performing ‘A Candlelight Christmas’ in the Nave at Guildford Cathedral with a choir on Saturday 6 December.

The winner of four Classical BRITS has sold in excess of seven million albums worldwide, and to date has produced nine studio albums, each one winning more critical acclaim than the one before.

Russell said: “This will be my first Christmas tour. I'm really excited to be performing in what will be a unique experience for me, just to piano in an intimate environment in the glorious surroundings of some of the most prestigious Cathedrals and Minsters in the UK.”

He has performed for some of the world’s greatest figures including, HM The Queen, the late Pope John Paul II who requested a private audience with Russell at The Vatican, Former US President Bill Clinton, The Emperor of Japan, European Prime Ministers, Middle Eastern Sultans and the King of Malaysia.

He has also collaborated with Pavarotti, Lionel Richie, Alexandra Burke, Michael Bolton, Cliff Richard, Lulu, Mel B, Meatloaf, and Cleopatra to name but a few.

The New York Times has said of the ‘godfather of classical crossover’: “He sings like Pavarotti, and entertains the audience like Sinatra.”

Russell, who has overcome two life-threatening brain tumours and gruelling radiotherapy treatment, is a patron for many charities and has raised millions of pounds for The Prince’s Trust, the Katy Holmes Trust, The Kirsty Club, along with performing to raise awareness and funds for Soccer Aid 2010, the ‘Legends Match’ at Celtic Park for Oxfam (2011) and the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 2012 .
