Cove curate spreads the Word with new dance track

Date: 15 January 2015
Gareth Dicks

The name of Jesus is not often uttered in night clubs, but if the Revd Gareth Dicks gets his way, that is exactly what will happen.

Gareth, curate at Cove Parish has recently released a new house music track ‘Bring Back my Joy’ under the alias ‘House of Praise’.

34 year-old Gareth, who took a degree in Sound Engineering at Oxford Brookes University, has already released a number of gospel house tracks for various independent dance labels over the last few years.

The latest single features the vocals of Los Angeles-based artist Coco Street whose uplifting vocals declare: “Who can make you stronger? Jesus! Lift you up a little higher? Jesus! For the joy of the Lord is your strength, so open up your heart and bring back my Joy!”

Gareth said: “Many people may be surprised at the connection between house music and faith - although many lovers of house music will happily agree it is a ‘spiritual thing’.

“New York garage music from the early/mid 1990s was in fact a combination of house beats and soaring gospel vocals. This trend is also continuing today- in 2013, Christian Detroit based DJ/producer Terrence Parker released a whole album of Christian house tracks on a major independent UK dance label, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to remix one of the tracks on that album.

“It is really exciting to see the support that the promo of my latest single is already receiving from many professional DJs in the club scene because the name of Jesus is being lifted up in the most unlikely places.

“My hope and vision is for there to be uplifting, inspirational house music playing in the clubs, bars and radio stations, so that through this media people can hear a positive life-affirming message.”

Gareth, who has been curate at Cove for 18 months typically spends his week meeting with other staff members and parishioners, taking funerals and weddings and leading and preaching at the Sunday services.

He said: “The parishioners aren’t really that surprised at me releasing a track. As it is, we are about to launch a brand new, monthly contemporary evening service called ‘Ignite’ at St Christopher’s Church (on February 1), so there will be plenty of modern creative worship happening there!”

The promo of House of Praise featuring Coco Street ‘Bring Back My Joy’ is out now on Street King Sounds and available exclusively at
