Cathedral hosts 2,500 school leavers

Date: 14 July 2015

Church School Leavers' services July 2015Over 2,500 Year 6 children from 42 Church of England primary schools, stretching right across Guildford diocese attended Leavers’ Services at our cathedral during the first week of July.

As children make the step to secondary school - and move from being the eldest in their often small school, to the youngest in a bigger learning environment – the services give time for reflection and prayer in the cathedral surroundings.

Activities included the building of a giant jigsaw, which grew during the week as each pupil was asked to celebrate being part of the family of diocesan schools, by adding their name and drawing of themselves to a unique piece of the puzzle.

The Dean of Guildford, the Very Revd Dianna Gwilliams, presented candles to each school group which were lit to signify the light of Christ going with them as they make their journeys to a new chapter in the their school lives.

Then afterward
    I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
    your old men shall dream dreams,
    and your young men shall see visions.
