The Diocese of Guildford’s Director of Education has announced that he will stand down at the end of the Academic Year 2015/16.
Canon Derek Holbird came to the role in January 2002, following a career in teaching, and many years in church leadership. This included 13 years as Head of Soho Parish School, Westminster, and posts in primary and secondary schools in Surrey.
“It was important to announce this early to allow plenty of time to find a successor,” said Derek.
“But there will be no let up on energy as we push further into the huge opportunities we have in serving our 22,000 children and young people in Church Schools in the Diocese, as well as many thousands more in schools benefiting from links with their local churches.”
"Calling from God"
The Bishop of Guildford, The Rt Revd Andrew Watson, said: “'Derek has given and continues to give outstanding service to the diocese, consistently seeing his work as a calling from God and not just a job.
“I have much enjoyed his wise, friendly, godly presence on my senior staff team, and am quite sure that he has fruitful ministry ahead of him, and not just in the past. Watch this space!”
Canon Colin Matthews, Chair of the Board of Education said "Derek's work is acclaimed both locally and nationally. His unique contribution of educational expertise and wisdom, combined with careful pastoral support and friendship, all motivated by his core desire to serve the Lord Jesus Christ, has been extremely important, especially during these turbulent and challenging times. We thank God for him.
