The Diocese of Guildford responds to the Panorama programme which aired on 29 April 2019 - 'Scandal in the Church of England'
Panorama - ‘Scandal in the Church of England’ - was a stark reminder of how the Church of England has often failed to listen to the experiences of survivors of abuse and to learn from them. It is regrettable that the victims of abuse have not always been listened to by the Church. We are deeply sorry for the pain that this has caused and are determined to do better in the future.
In the Diocese of Guildford we take safeguarding very seriously. Our churches must be places in which all people can worship, socialise and thrive in safety and we are committed to ensuring this is the case.
Our Safeguarding conference in September will focus on will focus how we can improve the way we listen to, support and learn from survivors: ‘Journeying alongside victims and survivors of abuse.’
We will be reviewing all past cases as part of the further review initiated by the Church of England to ensure we have responded to all disclosures correctly.
If you have been affected by the Panorama programme, or have any concerns about safeguarding or abuse in general, contact our Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser on 07544566850 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
