Guildford ordinands make history as they take on Vatican

Date: 28 June 2019

Thea Smith PictureThea Smith, an ordinand in the Diocese of Guildford, will be celebrating their ordination in slightly different manner by travelling to take on the Vatican side St Peter’s cricket club as part of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s team.

Thea, who studies at Trinity College and will serve her curacy at Christ Church Woking, joins fellow Guildford ordinand Becky Heath-Taylor, second year student at Trinity College, as the first female players to represent the Archbishop’s team.

Due to be ordained on 30 June at Guildford Cathedral, Thea will travel to Rome the following day before the match takes place on Thursday 4 July. This is the fifth match between the two sides, with the Archbishop’s side currently holding a three – one lead over the team from the Vatican.

Thea is a practised sports star having played football since the age of seven, and was instrumental in setting up the Trinity women’s rugby team.
