11 candidates from the Diocese of Guildford were ordained priests by the Bishop of Dorking the Rt Revd Jo Bailey Wells. The joyful ordination service at Guildford Cathedral was packed with scores of friends and family of the new clergy.
Being ordained as priest is the latest milestone on their vocational journey and the priests will now return to their parishes able to preside at Communion – an important milestone in their call to ministry.
The 11 new priests: David Candlin, Epsom St Martin of Tours; Susan Hayes, the Church in the Heath; John Marrow, Farnham; Darlene McCarley, Burpham; Helen Mitchell, Shottermill; Alexander Oehring, Walton on Thames; Kia Pakenham, Wonersh with Blackheath; Rutton Viccajee, Tongham; Sam Waako, Woking St Peter; Sophie Wellbelove, Camberley and Matt White, West Byfleet.
Speaking about her vocations journey Revd Sophie Wellbelove commented:
"My calling to ordained ministry was encouraged in me by my vicar and boss and the time... I asked God to confirm what others had been encouraging me to explore. I was hoping they were wrong, but as I braved the question and asked God if this was the next step for me, the Holy Spirit moved in me so strongly that it felt as though I was about the run a race.
"Here I am, running the race marked out for me."
