The Bishop of Dorking announced today that the Revd Dr Craig Holmes will be the next Director of Ordinands for the Diocese of Guildford.
Craig is currently vicar of St Richard’s Church, Hanworth in the Diocese of London. For the past six years, he has also served as an Assistant Director of Ordinands for the Kensington Episcopal Area, working with candidates from first conversations through to taking up their title post as curates.
Craig was himself a Guildford ordinand, and served his curacy in St John’s Church, Egham where he had previously worshipped as a graduate student at Royal Holloway University of London.
He is also a keen runner and will undertake the ‘Grand to Grand’ ultramarathon – a seven-day, self-supported ultramarathon across the desert of Arizona and Utah USA – in September to raise funds for his church.
Commenting on his appointment, Craig said:
“Spending time with those whom God may be calling to ordained ministry is always a delight, and I’m thrilled to be able take up the DDO post. Clearly, there are real challenges ahead for the Church, locally and nationally, both to increase the numbers of those being ordained, as well as to boost the numbers of those from under-represented groups. But it’s also an exciting time to be joining a diocese with such a strong vision and clear sense of direction, and I look forward to being part of the team who will help to deliver the wider vision of Transforming Church, Transforming Lives.”
Craig will join the wider Mission team at Church House as it launches this autumn, which brings together our work in Community Engagement, in Discipleship, Vocation and Ministry, and in Parish Development and Evangelism.
Welcoming Craig to the diocese, the Bishop of Dorking, Jo Bailey Wells said:
“I am absolutely thrilled that Craig – and his family – are responding to the call to move to Guildford. With his experience as an incumbent who has trained curates, as well as a passion for discerning the whisper of God with those at earlier stages in their vocational journey, I believe Craig has the gifts and graces for this role. I look forward to working closely with him as Sponsoring Bishop as he leads our wonderful team of Assistant DDOs and vocations advisers.
“It is also possible that Craig will join the growing diocesan triathlon team...”
The Director of Ordinands is responsible for people in the diocese who wish to explore their call to vocation – supporting them on the possible path towards ordination – and for curates in parishes who have been recently ordained. They also lead a team who engage with vocation in its widest sense – delivering training to those looking to develop in lay-clergy positions, to help everyone discern what God is calling them to be.

Craig will take up his new role as Director of Ordinands on 1 December 2019.
