Byfleet Vicar passes up World Gold Medal opportunity to do the day job

JohnMcCabbThe Revd John McCabe will be in his church this Saturday (26 October) conducting two weddings.

He could have been in the USA competing for a Gold Medal the the World Bi and Triathle World Championships.

In June this year, John won Gold in the European mixed Biathle M60 relay (Run 400m, Swim 50m Run 400m) alongside his 70 year old partner Mary Collet. John was selected to represent his country at the World Championship event taking place this weekend in St Petersburg, Florida. Instead, John will be focussing on the day job at St Mary’s Church, Byfleet.

“Sport is great,” says John, whose been whose been running competitively for 40 years. “I know that being active and fit is so good for all of us. Whether that’s running, taking an exercise class, swimming or walking briskly round the block. It improves physical health, our mental health and happiness.”

Encouraged by those benefits John, who’s ranked second in the UK in his age category, along with Sports Ambassadors and other Surrey athletes, is encouraging parishes across the county to sign up as volunteers or to take part in the 5k Park Run on Saturday14 December.

Park Run is a free, weekly community event held in over 400 locations across the country every Saturday morning. It’s aimed at all ages and abilities.

So far John and his colleagues have signed up 10 new people to get involved.

“Let’s do this,” John says. “I hope we can make that time on December 14 a community-blessing priority, and benefit all those taking part.”
