Leadership and Governance

Recruitment and appointment processes for school leaders

We work closely with our school leaders, governing bodies and academy trust boards to ensure that all our Church schools and academies are run effectively and serve their communities.

We provide support for the recruitment and appointment process of senior leaders of our Church schools and academies and provide guidance and advice to our Governing bodies on all aspects of leadership recruitment and appointment.

A strong, well led governing body, supportive of the school, its staff and its mission, make a crucial contribution to the school's well-being and effectiveness.

Support for governing bodies

Governors are the strategic leaders within schools and have the responsibility of promoting high standards of educational achievement, ensuring every child in their school receives the best quality education. According to the DfE Governors' Handbook (January 2015), the governing body has three strategic functions;

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and the performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

The size of the governing body can vary, but a church school's governing body will be made up of representatives from the school staff (including the headteacher), the local authority, the parent body, the PCC of the parish church and the Diocese, the latter being referred to as Foundation Governors.

Foundation Governors have their own specific role within the governing body.

Guildford Diocese Education is committed to supporting all our governors and provides a substantial training programme. Each church school has an attached Consultant who is also able to offer in-school training and advice for governing bodies.
