We are continuing the series of stories celebrating our soon-to-be Reverends from our Caleb Stream as we head towards their ordination on Sunday. Today's story comes from Kelly Morris.
How was Kelly called?
I have a long tradition of faith, starting in the Roman Catholic Church as a child, in which I was both baptised and confirmed. I felt a call to follow God at my confirmation, but I did not begin living a fully-committed Christian life until several years later, when I turned 20.
I have attended a variety of traditions since then – Baptist, Methodist, and Charismatic/Evangelical churches, until finally landing in the Anglican church. I have learned and been blessed in them all.
I have had a long career in industry and education. I worked for many years at British Airways and was fortunate to travel all over the world, experiencing many different cultures and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. I am currently entering my 23rd year at sixth form college where I teach A-level Chemistry and was a Head of Year for 14 years.
I have two sons and a grandson who all live in America. I am very academic and passionate about teaching. I recently gained a Foundation award in Theology from the University of Durham. I also love to write, and hope one day to write a book.
I have long wanted to work in the church, and began training as a Licensed Lay Minister before I felt called to ordained ministry. The opportunity to do this came when the Caleb programme was launched, for which I am very thankful. It was a joyful surprise to discover myself moving into the space where I was always meant to be.
It has been a struggle to study and work simultaneously, and there have been moments of doubt. But I am reminded that God has called me to purposes of His own and that He will equip and guide me as I obey His call.
I am currently an occasional preacher, lead intercessions, am a member of the prayer team, lead worship, and am on the welcome team. I help out at Kids’ Church activities on occasion. I am looking forward to a sacramental ministry, if and when I am priested. In the meantime, I look forward to serving my church community as a Deacon.
My one piece of advice to those exploring their vocation is to look at God and His capacities, and not your own – and to be willing for the journey to unfold over time.
Genesis 12:1, encourages me to be ready to respond in faith, one step at a time.
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”
- Genesis 12:1
