Response to Let there be Light

Many of us will have been shocked and saddened by the latest revelations and disclosures regarding Mike Pilavachi and in particular the YouTube video by Matt and Beth Redman, Let there be Light.

We know that many from our churches have benefitted from Soul Survivor events over a number of years and the recent news may have understandably raised concerns for you. Whilst we are not able to comment on or discuss an ongoing investigation, and only know what has been publicly shared, we want to let you know that we and your parish leadership teams and safeguarding officers are available to speak with anyone who has concerns and can signpost you to appropriate help and support. Safe Spaces also provides independent advice and support – their contact number is 0300 303 1056.

The National Safeguarding Team have issued a statement which provides more information on the investigation and outcome.

The news reminds us all about the vital importance of safeguarding in ministry and the risks and dangers when power is allowed to be exercised without accountability and safeguards in place. It reminds us too of the importance of creating and developing healthy and safe cultures where we are and of being open to challenge and change. One of the National Safeguarding Standards encourages us to look at Culture Leadership and Capacity  where we are and provides some useful ways of examining and assessing this in our context.

Every blessing,

Bishop Andrew
